Cervical Cancer Screening with Menstrual Pads: A Rural India Study

Dr. Atul Budukh from Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, conducted a study assessing the use of menstrual pads for HPV detection and cervical cancer screening among rural Indian women.

Menstrual pads were collected from participants in Maharashtra, and HPV testing was conducted via PCR method. Results indicated a sensitivity of 83% in Jamkhed and 67% in Pune, with high specificity rates of 99% and 88%, respectively.

The study concludes that menstrual pad-based HPV testing is a noninvasive, simple method with significant potential for cervical cancer screening in rural areas.
