Prevotella Dominance in Tobacco Users: A Metagenomic Study
This preliminary study by Dr. Krishna Mohan Singh (HOD of Molecular and Cytogenetics) and Dr. Manan Patel (Consultant Geneticist), in collaboration with Parul University and GBRC, investigates the effect of tobacco on the oral microbiome using metagenomic sequencing.
Analyzing 64 samples from tobacco chewers, smokers, and healthy individuals, we generated 10 Gbp of high-quality data. Our results show that 18 Prevotella species are more abundant in tobacco users, with Streptococcus as the most prevalent genus.
These findings highlight significant changes in the oral microbiome due to tobacco use and the advantages of metagenomic analysis for detailed insights.
