Sterling Accuris Diagnostics offers the quadruple marker test in Ahmedabad  to screen for certain birth defects in a foetus.

Overview of Quadruple Marker Test

A quadruple marker test is done to determine whether a developing foetus is at risk for certain birth defects or not. This test is done between 16-20 weeks (second trimester) of pregnancy. Four markers evaluated in the quadruple marker test are-

  • Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone released by placental cell
  • Unconjugated estriol- produced by the foetus and placenta
  • Alpha-fetoprotein- produced by the foetus’s liver
  • Inhibin A- produced by the placenta

Book a quadruple marker test near you to diagnose the possibility of certain congenital defects in your developing baby.

Why and When Is a Quadruple Marker Test Done?

A quadruple marker test is done during the second trimester of pregnancy to assess the risk for certain congenital birth defects in the developing foetus. A normal baby has 22 pairs plus one pair of sex chromosomes. In a trisomy, there is an extra chromosome present. This extra chromosome may be either at chromosome- number 21 (Downs’ Syndrome), number 18 (Edward’s syndrome) or number 13 (Patau’s syndrome).

Although the quadruple marker test is recommended for all pregnant women, your doctor may recommend a quadruple marker test in pregnancy if-

  • Your age is 35 or more
  • Suffered from viral infection during pregnancy
  • Exposed to high radiation doses
  • You have a family history of congenital disease (birth defects)
  • Exposed to harmful medicine/drugs during pregnancy

Sterling Accuris offers a reliable quadruple marker test in Ahmedabad  with timely reports.

The quadruple marker test also uses an NT scan which utilizes ultrasound technology, which together with the biochemical tests allows doctors to perform a risk assessment of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome that may exist in the developing fetus.

Females that have a risk assessment of 1:250 of trisomy are considered to be screen-positive, with further confirmatory testing required. Risk assessment can be divided into low, intermediate and high risk for trisomy.

Causes for abnormal quadruple marker test

  • Down syndrome (trisomy 21)
  • Edward syndrome (trisomy 18)
  • Turner syndrome
  • Spina bifida (spinal defect)
  • Heart defect
  • Absence of brain or skull part (anencephaly)
  • Death of foetus
