Overview of BCR-ABL Quantification (Minor) by RT PCR Test

BCR-ABL is a mutated fusion gene formed by a combination of the BCR and ABL genes, located on chromosomes 22 and 9 respectively. It is a somatic mutation, rather than one inherited from parents.  BCR-ABL is present in most cases of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and occasionally in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML).

The test works by amplifying a tiny amount of DNA of the BCR-ABL gene and then measuring the amount of the fusion gene transcripts present in the sample. The result is expressed as a ratio of the amount of the BCR-ABL gene to the amount of a control gene. The lower the ratio, the better the prognosis. A higher ratio may indicate that the leukemia is not responding to treatment.
