What are the reasons for false positive results?

Plasma metanephrines can be elevated due to alcohol, clonidine and benzodiazepines. Cocaine and lidocaine also result in increased metanephrine levels.

What should be avoided before taking the epinephrine 24 hr Test?

  • It is advisable to discontinue all medications viz. alpha methyldopa, MAO and COMT inhibitors as well as medications related to hypertension, 72 hrs. before collection (Physician to be consulted for stopping the medication).
  • Avoid alpha and beta blockers, tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, cigarette smoking and exercise.
