FAQ
What do low levels of Factor XII indicate?
Lower levels of Factor XII suggest a disease named thrombosis. Thrombosis means that a clot is formed within a blood vessel thereby causing a partial or complete blockage, but doctors are not very sure about precisely how thrombosis is related to Factor XII deficiency.
What other tests should be taken with this test?
Your doctor may also recommend a prothrombin time test to examine specific factors in your coagulation cascade.
How is Factor XII Assay performed?
Factor XII activity is done using an APTT-based one-stage clotting time Assay. Factor XII depleted plasma is taken up as the substrate and the clotting time of the patient's plasma is compared with the clotting time of normal plasma.
The test is performed using a blood sample. At Sterling Accuris diagnostics, we use a Pikrite kit that spots patients' veins easily and collects samples in a single prick.

Sterling Accuris diagnostics offers a Factor XII assay in Mahuva to measure the activity levels of Factor XII.
Overview of Factor XII Assay
Factor XII deficiency is a rare congenital blood disorder that results in prolonged clotting (coagulation) of blood in the test tube. It is synthesized in the liver and induced by a deficiency of factor XII also known as the Hageman factor, a plasma protein namely glycoprotein. Precisely, factor XII is a clotting factor and floats in your bloodstream freely. When factor XII comes in touch with the injured wall of a vein, it triggers and activates coagulation factor XII and this interaction starts off a chain reaction known as a coagulation cascade forming a blood clot.
A clot helps from losing too much blood. Factor XII also provokes swelling and inflammation. The F12 gene in your body is responsible for making coagulation factor XII. Mutations in the F12 gene result in factor XII deficiency and hereditary angioedema type III. Factor XII deficiency is compensated by other blood clotting factors and thus it is thought to be benign and is generally asymptomatic unless it is accidentally found out through preoperative blood tests that are needed by hospitals.
Why and when is a Factor XII Assay done?
This test is generally recommended by a health care practitioner to diagnose the deficiency of coagulation Factor XII and also to specify the reason for prolonged APTT (Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time).
Therefore, if your doctor suggests then don't wait and get a Factor XII Assay at Sterling Accuris diagnostics in Mahuva for the most accurate and reliable results.
