FAQ

What is interstitial lung disease?

It is a type of gradual lung deterioration, where irreversible scarring of lung tissues occurs. It could happen due to several reasons like long-term hazardous chemical exposure, or any autoimmune disease, or may be due to unknown causes.

What should I expect during a BAL analysis?

The patient is first placed under general anesthesia, and sterile saline is added dropwise and a bronchoscope is placed down the throat, after which BAL fluid is collected. The whole procedure is carried out under complete care and expert guidance. You might need to fast before the procedure as suggested by your doctor.

x

Overview of BAL (Bronchoalveolar Lavage) Analysis

The BAL (Bronchoalveolar Lavage) Analysis is used for the diagnosis of lower respiratory tract Diseases. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a procedure that is sometimes done during a bronchoscopy. It is also called bronchoalveolar washing. BAL is used to collect a sample from the lungs for testing. During the procedure, a saline solution is put through the bronchoscope to wash the airways and capture a fluid sample. The analysis of BAL fluid is of different types like microscopic examination with cyto-stains, molecular analysis via. PCR, etc.

Detect any lower respiratory tract Diseases by booking a BAL (Bronchoalveolar Lavage) Analysis near you. Sterling Accuris Diagnostics offers a reliable and fast BAL (Bronchoalveolar Lavage) Analysis in Mansa.

Why And When Is A BAL (Bronchoalveolar Lavage) Analysis Done?

A BAL (Bronchoalveolar Lavage) Analysis is recommended by a doctor when many other techniques like physical exam, clinical history, and pulmonary function testing offer insufficient data to make a definitive diagnosis.

Your doctor recommends a BAL (Bronchoalveolar Lavage) Analysis in the following cases:

  • Atypical respiratory infection in immune-compromised patients
  • Hypoxemia or unexplained pulmonary infiltrate
  • Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis (PAP)
  • Diffuse Alveolar Haemorrhage (DAH)
  • Eosinophilic Pneumonia
  • Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILDs)
  • Chronic berylliosis/Cancer in lung due to asbestos exposure
  • Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP)

BAL (Bronchoalveolar Lavage) Analysis: Main Highlights

  • Instructions: No fasting is required
  • Recommended Age: All age groups
  • Sample type for test: Instillation from lungs/BAL Fluid

How to Interpret the BAL (Bronchoalveolar Lavage) Analysis Report

The BAL analysis procedure is facilitated by the introduction of a bronchoscope in the lungs that allow the collection of BAL fluid in sterile tubes. Then the fluid is subjected to analysis as needed, e.g. Cytological or molecular analysis. Different features of BAL fluid are suggestive of different pathologies like:

  • Higher neutrophils (>5%) – Lung Infection, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF)
  • Higher eosinophils (>25%) - Churg-Strauss syndrome and other Eosinophilia lung diseases
  • Higher Lymphocytes (>50%) - Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis
  • Gradual darkening of BAL fluid is suggestive of DAH.

The common infections indicated by abnormal BAL results are:

  • Tuberculosis
  • Bacterial pneumonia
  • Fungal infection
